Disc Harrow

I just got a Disk Harrow and stated to use it.
I was suprised that it did not penierate that ground more than an inch or so. I increased the gang angle. Currently the tractor's 3 point is set to "position" control. Will changing the 3ph affect the depth of the disk?

Charlie, by incresing the gang angle, leveling the disk front to rear with your 3 pt top link, and letting your 3 pt. all the way down so it isn't holding the disk up you have did everything you can do for penetration except adding weight to the frame of the disk, but be carefull unless factory weight brackets are on your disk the frame may not be strong enough and damage your machine. Most likely the soil is just too hard for it to penetrate without some form of deeeper tillage such as plowing being done first to loosen the soil up. Hope this helps, Frank. ....

CharlieR - I don't have a disk. But when I was a kid I spent a lot of time my friend's farm. They used the disk to tear up the sod, then used the plow to turn the soil, then a harrow to comb the soil before planting. Maybe it depends on the soil - but I don't think they ever expected any kind of deep soil penetration with the disk. ....

There are different kinds of harrows, sping tooth,rigid tooth or disk. Disk harrow is good for chopping up weeds,straw, or breaking up the ground just enough to sow seeds... I plow the ground and then use a disk to chop it up and I pull a couple of railroad ties behind the disk.. A disk harrow will not penetrate the ground much unless you make repeated passes Better off to plow and then disk ....

If the gound is hard it takes a long time to soften with a disk. The weight of the disks is also a factor. Many disks had a shelf on the top to pile weight. ....
